Self-Care Day in Guérande

October 25, 2017

Self-care is any activity that you do to deliberately take care of your mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept in theory, it’s something we very often overlook. Good self-care is key to any preventive health regime; it can improve mood and immune function.

Self-care can be learning more about your life passions (related or unrelated to work, as long as you are enjoying it!), new experiences, and/or just doing something because why the heck not. I'm a big advocate of getting outside of your comfort zone. Travel is amazing if you want to get outside of your bubble.

Visit France! The fortified wall of Guérande is one of the best preserved and complete in France. Its circumference stretches almost 1 mile around so this is a super small city. Guérande was visited regularly by Breton rulers such as Duchess Anne of Brittany. In 1532, upon the marriage of Anne to Charles VIII of France, Brittany (and with it Guerande) became unified with the French Kingdom.

In the late Middle Ages, the city was regularly visited by merchants from Rouen who came to buy salt. This area produces gray salt which is still used in the country today. The salterns of Guérande is measures about 1700 hectares in size. The current saltmarshes began before the 9th century.

I remember the first times I went to France and was just struck by the history in these buildings and pathways. This church was built in the 13th century; it had this amazing old organ and glass-painted windows of Christ. There are people buried inside the walls.

Another fun fact about this town: crêperies everywhere (read: lots to eat!) There are many crêperies here in Guerande because crêpes originated in Brittany, the northwest region of France. Galettes are savory and crêpes are sweet. These lovely flat cakes are normally enjoyed with apple cider; the restaurant had it on tap and it was delicious.

I was lactose sensitive. I am happy to report that my Yoga Therapy & Ayurveda lifestyle is helping me to digest food better. This is a galette (savory crêpe) of ham, mushrooms, and fresh cream. The outside layer was so thin honestly I could've eaten another one if I wasn't saving room for dessert!

For dessert, I had this lemon crêpe made with housemade lemon custard. And yes, it was the best crepe I've ever had.

Another fun fact: This region is also a big dairy producer so this cream was probably made with milk from grass-fed cows. Perfect meal and lots of history and local delicacies to enrich the body and the senses.

Please visit Guérande soon and tell me what you think!
